Fun-Sized iPhone Reviews: Volume 1
Fun-Sized Reviews are bite sized nuggets of knowledge that’ll help you make App Store purchasing decisions in rapid time.
eBoy FixPix – $1.99, Delicious Toys
Get this game if: You like pixel art; have $2 to spare
Tilt and wiggle your iDevice until the image on your screen makes sense! FixPix has 100 levels featuring some crazy pixelated art sliced up and needing repair. Line the picture up to see the full thing (and perhaps screenshot some of your favorites to use as wallpaper) and admire the detail put into some of the scenes before moving on to the next level. I love this game, but it needs a) an update to allow you to replay levels, and b) a price drop before I demand people buy it with reckless abandon.
Robot Unicorn Attack – $2.99, Adult Swim
Get this game if: You like unicorns, rainbow, Erasure
A popular Adult Swim flash game comes to the App Store – this simple side-scroller promises you three wishes (in the form of robotic unicorn heads) as you collect fairies, smash through stars, and leave a trail of rainbow wherever you go. Free to play online but surprisingly expensive in the App Store, Robot Unicorn Attack is a cult favorite that makes no sense at all but is kind of fantastic despite that. Unicorns are very e-hip at the moment – if this game had come out in 2003, it would have been Robot Badger Attack (followed by Pirate Ninja Attack and Robot Bacon Attack).
QRANK – Free, Ricochet Labs
Get this game if: You have a lot of useless knowledge and a desire to rule the world
QRANK is a social trivia game you can only play once a day. You must answer 15 questions out of the available 20 in four categories, with power-ups and bonuses to help you rack up the points. Play against friends in the game, and connect it to your Facebook account to brag about your score. There are some fun unlockable achievements to collect, and the game is laid out in a very slick way with great sound. My only complaint is that I can only play once a day – I really love trivia games, and QRANK hands everything over in an extremely attractive (and FREE) package. There is no reason for you not to have this game.
Ninjatown: Trees of DOOM! – $1.99, Venan Entertainment
Get this game if: You are looking for a new addiction; enjoy climbing trees but dislike getting sweaty
Confession time: I love Ninjatown. I collect the blind box items, have stickers on my scooter, and own the Ninjatown tower defense DS game. With all that in mind, it’s no surprise that I love Trees of Doom – but I am fairly confident I would be all over this even if I was new to the Shawnimals universe. You, the Wee Ninja, must climb the tree and avoid the many dangers that come your way. It doesn’t seem like there’s a lot to it, but the game throws a lot of obstacles at you and before you know it, you’ll have wasted hours playing “just one more climb”. Also: mustache rides. $1.99 is a little expensive (in the world of the App Store), but there is a lot of relay value in this very cute game. Did I mention the mustache rides? Dude, there are mustache rides. What’s not to love?
